Week 8 Preview: Grand Prairie faces Lamar with a chance to move to 4-0 in district play, Allen faces Denton Guyer in monumental clash of giants, Cedar Hill and Desoto face off in the Battle of the Belt Line

Grand Prairie defeated its crosstown rival South Grand Prairie on Friday at The Gopher-Warrior Bowl. Grand Prairie blocked a field goal attempt as time expired and they celebrated with jubilation after beating SGP for the first time in 12 years. Backup quarterback Adrian Wilson was 9 of 12 passing for 132 yards and two touchdowns. The Gophers are 3-0 in district 8-6A and will take on Arlington Lamar this Friday. Lamar is battling for the last and fourth playoff spot in the district with Arlington and Sam Houston. All three of those teams have a 1-2 record in district play. Jaden Morris and the Vikings offense will look to repeat their performance against Bowie as the Viking offense put up 62 points. Jaden Morris, Jaylon McCoy, and Javion Green will lead the offensive attack against a stout Gopher defense. Alex Torres leads the Gopher defense with 92 tackles in 7 games. He is a physical linebacker with great instincts and the ability to make open-field tackles. Christian Cross is another high motor linebacker for the Gophers that has 91 tackles on the season. Grand Prairie is playing the best football at the right time, and with many offensive weapons like Savion Red, Drew Damper, Kijon Anderson, and Adrian Wilson, the Gophers show no signs of slowing down.

Parker's Pick: Grand Prairie by 10.

Allen (5-1, 2-0 District 5-6A) will face Denton Guyer (7-0, 3-0) in a clash of giants on Friday. Allen has a powerful rushing attack led by Jaylen Jenkins who has 911 yards and 14 touchdowns in 6 games. Allen quarterback Mike Hawkins has passed for 1,098 yards and 7 touchdowns in six games. Allen's only loss on the season comes against Atascocita. The Eagles will look to hand Denton Guyer its first loss of the season. This is a task that will not come easy. Guyer has signature wins against Atascocita and Denton Ryan. The Wildcats will look to add another win against a powerhouse program. Their offense is led by junior quarterback Jackson Arnold who has passed for 1663 yards and 14 touchdown passes on the season. Guyer has an explosive wide receiver core with Jace Wilson, Sutton Lee, Grayson O'Bara, and Brody Noble. The Allen defense will look to slow down the passing attack that Denton Guyer brings into this game. Guyer is usually a running team, but this year they have added another dimension with a potent passing attack. District 5-6A is considered the toughest district in the state of Texas. This matchup will feature two teams that play with contrasting styles. Allen has rushed for over 1,000 yards this season. The Guyer defense led by North Texas commit Vincent Paige will look to stifle the offensive line of Allen. This game will come down to the trenches and which team can control the line of scrimmage.

Parker's Pick: Guyer by 3.

The Battle of the Belt Line will take place on Friday in Desoto. This game between Cedar Hill and Desoto is one of the most storied rivalries in the state of Texas. Cedar Hill (4-2, 3-0, District 11-6A) will look to set up a district title game with Duncanville if the Longhorns defeat Desoto. Desoto (4-2, 2-1) will look to take control of second place in district with a win. Desoto has already lost to Duncanville which makes this game very important for seeding in the playoffs. Desoto quarterback Matt Allen has passed for 1,453 yards and 26 touchdowns on the season. The Desoto receiving trio of Mike Murphy, Johntay Cook, and Stephon Johnson Jr. have combined for 23 touchdowns and 1,115 receiving yards. The Cedar Hill defense led by Kylan Salter and Jalon Peoples will look to slow down the hig-powered passing attack of Desoto. On the offensive side of the ball the Longhorns of Cedar Hill have a dominant rushing attack. Cedar Hill quarterback Cedric Harden Jr. leads the team in rushing with 522 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. Cedar Hill primarily runs the ball the majority of the time on the offensive side of the ball. This game will be won in the trenches. The key matchup in this game is the Desoto defensive line facing off against the Cedar Hill offensive line. Cedar Hill has been able to overpower teams with their physical style of play and downhill rushing attack. The Desoto defensive line will have to key in on defending the quarterback run and forcing the ball out of the hands of Harden Jr. This is a matchup heavy game and it will be an absolute slugfest for four quarters. This is a rivalry game that will take a full effort on both sides of the ball and the team that stays calm in intense moments of the game will come out on top.

Parker's Pick: Desoto by 3.
