The Wranglers of West Mesquite head to McKinney on Thursday after a tough 56-28 loss to Longview last week. At halftime, the game was tied, but eventually, the Lobos pulled away to start district 1-0. West Mesquite (2-3, 0-1 District 7-5A) takes on the Bulldogs of McKinney North in an important matchup. Both teams head into this matchup 0-1 in district play. This is a swing game that could be very vital as the winner sets themselves up in a good position to make the playoffs as a 3 or 4 seed in the district.
With Longview and Highland Park at the top of that district, that leaves the five other teams contending for two spots. West Mesquite quarterback has thrown for 997 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions in 5 games. He is also completing 57 percent of his passes on the season. West Mesquite has used the passing attack this season to fuel their offense. The Wranglers have three receivers over 200 yards on the season.
Gabriel Corona leads the Wranglers in receiving yards with 287 yards, 15 catches, and 3 touchdowns. Javion Jackson leads the Wranglers in catches with 16, he also has 282 yards and 2 touchdowns. TJ Turner leads the Wranglers in touchdown receptions with 6. He also has 12 catches and 232 yards on the season. Turner has been a huge red-zone target this season.
McKinney North (1-4, 0-1 District 7-5A) looks to end their four-game losing streak this week. The Bulldogs are led by a rushing attack that is fueled by Jadan Smith and Elijah Alexander. Smith has rushed for 586 yards on 87 carries and has accounted for three total touchdowns. Alexander has carried the ball 56 times for 286 yards and two touchdowns.
McKinney North quarterback Gavin Constantine heads into this game with intentions of rekindling the connection he had with receiver Korbin Hendrix in the Bulldog's only win of the season. Hendrix has 23 catches for 336 yards and 5 touchdowns. Constantine has thrown for 677 yards and 9 touchdowns on the season.
This is a game that will be highly contested between two teams trying not to fall to 0-2 in district play. One of these two teams will capture their first district win and the other will fall to 0-2 which will really hurt their chances of making a bid for the playoffs.
