Week One Recap: Denton Ryan Runs Past Longview, Fossil Ridge Rushing Attack Leads the Panthers Past Azle, and Burleson Centennial Survives Late Against Prosper Rock Hill
The football season is here and week one did not disappoint. The headline of the weekend was the Jerry Jones Classic matchup at the Star in Frisco between Longview and Denton Ryan. Two successful programs in the state took the field on the biggest stage on Saturday. Denton Ryan Quarteback Khalon Davis made his first start for the Raiders. The Raiders only threw the ball 9 times and Davis completed 66 percent of his passes for 84 yards. Kalib Hicks carried the heavyload on the ground as he rushed for 139 yards and 3 touchdowns. He only carried the ball 9 times and averaged 15 yards per carry. The Denton Ryan defense held the Longview offense to 178 total yards. Longview was just not able to get anything going on offense as they were stifled by the physical Raider defense led by junior linebacker Anthony Hill. Hill is an impressive open field tackler that covers ground in a hurry. Ryan is off to a great start to their season and continues to dominate as they blew past Longview 40-7.
Fossil Ridge took on a very tough Azle team on Thursday night to open up the 2021 season. Fossil Ridge is a young team with a lot of talent. Sophomore quarterback Logan Cundiff made his first start and he did not disappoint. He was very calm and poised throughout the game. A leader that did not panic when his team went down. Cundiff and the Fossil Ridge offense took the field with 3:07 left in the game. They used their dominant rushing attack to move the ball down the field. Cundiff had an impressive run to put his team up by one with 12 seconds left in the game. Landen Chambers also had a big night on the ground as he rushed for 4 touchdowns and 216 yards. He carried the heavy load which allowed them to open up the passing game just enough to give them a lift when they needed it the most. Fossil Ridge defeated Azle 42-41 and will look to carry momentum of a come from behind win into week 2.
Burleson Centennial opened the season up at home against Prosper Rock Hill. Rock Hill led for most of the game behind the rushing attack of Donovan Shannon who had 19 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown. Rock Hill quarterback Brenner Cox threw for 3 touchdowns, but it was not enough to hold off the impressive rushing attack of Centennial. Centennial had a balanced rushing attack with David Clerk rushing for 77 yards, Phillip Hamilton rushing for 3 touchdowns and 67 yards, Jaheim Ababio rushed for 67 yards, and Elijah Zeh rushed for 65 yards and the game winning touchdown with 12 seconds left. The Spartans defeated Rock Hill 34-28 and will be a dangerous team to watch with many explosive players to hand the ball to.
